Gifted/Talented Program

Following is a letter sent home to parents of Gifted/Talented students describing the program.

November 17, 2009

Dear Parent,

We are excited to begin a pilot program for our students that have shown high- level academic skills, strong logical reasoning, and excellent behavior.  Our hope is that this program will offer a fun and exciting way to challenge these students and allow them to put their skills to work outside of the classroom environment.   We are inviting your child to participate in this program.

Our program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3-4 p.m., beginning on Thursday, Dec. 3rd, 2009.  Our Tuesday sessions will be for students in grades 1-4, and our Thursday sessions will be for students in grades 5-8.  The students who have been invited to attend have been personally recommended by their teacher/teachers, have A’s or B’s (M’s or P’s for the primary grades) in all core classes, have not been referred to the office for any behavior issues, have overall good behavior in school, and who will benefit from working together in a group setting.  We will meet in the old music room each week, which is in the SAC.  Students are asked to bring a healthy snack to each session.

Our hopes for the program are that it will challenge these students to use their skills in new ways, and possibly open up new skills for them that they didn’t know they had.  The emphasis will be cooperative group projects in which all students will be able to use their skills to benefit the group.  We hope to bring in some outside speakers, work on a “green” project for our school, spend time discussing some of the challenges high-level students face, and incorporate math, language, science, social studies, religion, music, art, and drama into our sessions.  We may even look at registering for some academic competitions in which the students would have a chance to show their skills in front of others.

If your child will be able to attend, please fill out the permission slip on the next page and return it to your child’s teacher no later than Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 2009.  If your child is unable to attend right now because of basketball practice, but you would like your child to attend once basketball season is over, please fill out the permission slip and note this on the slip.  If we do not receive a signed permission slip from you by Dec. 1st, we will assume that your child will be unable to join us.  If you have any questions, please contact Eileen Michalczyk either by FastDirect (I am the second grade teacher) or by phone at the school at (303) 333-8275.  Thank you for sharing your child with us!

Sincerely,

Eileen Michalczyk
